He is a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. Dr. Augsburger received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Maryland. Before joining the Maryland faculty, he was a senior research pharmacist at the Johnson and Johnson Research Center in New Brunswick, NJ. Previous positions at the university have included chair of the department of pharmaceutics and director of graduate programs in pharmaceutics. He has directed the research of 37 graduate students and seven post-doctoral students/visiting scientists in two main areas: (1) the design and optimization of immediate release and extended release oral solid dosage forms for both their performance as drug delivery systems and their manufacturability (2) the instrumentation of automatic capsule filling machines, tablet presses and other pharmaceutical processing equipment. Current research focuses on the application of pharmaceutical science and technology to dietary supplements/nutraceuticals. Augsburger serves on the editorial advisory boards of several journals, including Pharmaceutical Development and Technology, AAPS PharmSci, and the Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. A former associate editor for Pharmaceutical Research, Augsburger currently serves as AAPS PharmSci’s Editor for pharmaceutical technology. As the 1999 President of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, he spearheaded the establishment of the AAPS Dietary Supplement Advisory Board which he currently chairs.
