Scientific Journals: AAPS PharmSci

About AAPS PharmSci

AAPS PharmSci is an electronic-only publication wholly owned by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS). The journal covers all areas dealing with drug discovery, development, and therapy. Its goal is to disseminate scientific information worldwide, taking full advantage of the electronic publication medium; this includes the publication of articles with multimedia features, encompassing 3D graphics, video, interactive figures and databases, and sound.

AAPS PharmSci is guided by a Board of Editors. The Editor-in-Chief coordinates the activities of the Board of Editors and serves as the arbiter in scientific or ethical disputes. Submitted manuscripts are assigned to an editor with relevant expertise. Each submission will be evaluated by a dual-peer review system, primarily utilizing the members of the Editorial Advisory Board. The Board is complemented by a list of referees who may rotate into the Editorial Advisory Board. High standards of the referee system are essential in order to enhance the value of the published information, and all scientists are invited to participate. Those wishing to serve in this capacity should contact the AAPS editorial office and provide a list of five keywords that defines their area of expertise.

The assignment of referees and the processing of manuscripts is performed at the AAPS editorial offices in Arlington, Virginia, using a computerized editorial tracking system that relies on keyword selection and automatic time lines for review. In addition, submitting authors can suggest editors and referees of their choice. Our intent is to complete the review process expeditiously, using strictly electronic communication between the editorial office, editors, referees, and authors. Once an article is accepted a final version is sent to the author for approval. The article is published on the AAPS PharmSci web site shortly thereafter.

Although AAPS PharmSci is an electronic publication medium, reprints will be available in printed form upon request. However, not all electronic features can be reproduced in this format. Authors requesting reprints will receive information on the pricing of reprint delivery, and this will also be available in the Instructions to Authors.

The abstracts for the 1998 AAPS Annual Meeting comprise the first issue of AAPS PharmSci (Volume 1, Issue 1)and may be found in the previous issue archive. The abstracts for the 1999 AAPS Annual Meeting can be found in a supplement to the current issue (Volume 1, Issue 4). Upon acceptance by the responsible Editor, an article will be published by placing it into the AAPS PharmSci Web site.

Each issue of the journal will be closed at the end of the current month. Authors will retain the use of their own published articles for most noncommercial purposes, even though the copyright is owned by AAPS.

AAPS PharmSci has been accepted for indexing by Medline, Index Medicus, Institute of Scientific Information's Science Citation Index and Chem Abstracts. Staff is actively working to implement these acceptances. Indexing covers all articles retroactive to the first issue. This will be enhanced by library consortia, enabling the rapid dissemination of AAPS PharmSci

Access to scientific information at a reasonable cost ranks among the primary goals of a scientist. All AAPS members will receive subscriptions as a part of their membership benefits, thereby assuring wide distribution.

AAPS PharmSci will remain under constant development for the foreseeable future. The technology of web site publication is rapidly advancing; part of our challenge will be to respond to these ongoing changes and to make the journal accessible to a large audience without compromising high-end technical capabilities. We invite the active participation of all; comments and/or suggestions are welcome. Please contact the Editor-in-Chief:
