Dr. Unadkat's research focuses on disposition, toxicity and efficacy of anti-HIV drugs in pregnant women and neonates. Currently, Dr. Unadkat is leading investigation of mechanisms of maternal-fetal transmission of HIV and working to develop a model to test the potential of anti-HIV drugs to interrupt such transmission. The goal of these efforts is establishment of an animal model, with a high incidence of fetal infection, to use to determine if combination anti-HIV chemotherapy is more effective than monotherapy in preventing vertical transmission. Such a model could play a valuable role in future work to identify and prioritize therapeutic strategies, which are most likely to succeed in the clinic in preventing vertical HIV transmission. Other research in Dr. Unadkat's laboratory is focused on mechansims of nuclesoide transport in the human intestine and mechanisms of drug interaction of anti-HIV and anti-opportunistic infection drugs.
