AAPS RESOURCES: Visiting Scientist Program

Overview

The Visiting Scientist Program was initiated in 1985 and has been growing ever since. The purpose of the program is to provide an opportunity for pharmaceutical scientists to visit schools of pharmacy of their choice and to share their knowledge and experience with undergraduate and graduate students. The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) is the coordinator of the program. The following organizations are co-sponsors :

  • American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS)
  • American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP)
  • American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP)
  • American Pharmaceutical Association Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science (APhA)
  • Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA)
  • Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA)

Objectives

This rewarding program is specifically designed to provide a solid educational resource based on the following objectives:

  • Expose undergraduate pharmacy students to research in the pharmaceutical sciences and to encourage them to consider graduate work for an advanced degree,
  • Expose pharmacy students to career opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry,
  • Provide schools of pharmacy and their faculties with access to industry scientists with working expertise,
  • Increase communications and to foster information exchange between academia, industry scientists and students, and
  • Convey to students and faculties the complexities, challenges, and costs associated with drug discovery, development, production, quality control, and marketing.
