Clinical Sciences (CS) Section
About the CS Section
The Clinical Sciences (CS) Section provides the clinical research dimension
within the comprehensive range of pharmaceutical sciences represented in AAPS
and is concerned with developing knowledge and understanding related to the
clinical use of pharmaceuticals (chemical agents and biological agents). The CS
Section serves as a forum for those scientists engaged in research on the
therapeutics and clinical assessment of drugs and biologicals. This section
addresses the rational application of pharmaceutical and related sciences in
the clinical setting, including the following: experimental design, conduct and
analysis of clinical trials; regulatory aspects of clinical trials and drug
registration; risk assessment, therapeutic extrapolation from animals to
humans; pharmacoepidemiology; drug interactions; and in appropriate
populations, therapeutic efficacy/safety and the response to alternative dosage
forms. The CS Section provides an opportunity for interaction between
scientists in academia, government, and industry who are engaged in clinical
research. The section facilitates the interaction of AAPS members with
scientists from other clinical organizations using joint formats such as
symposia, workshops, and regional/national meetings.
The CS Section is please to offer through the generosity of Axelson BioPharma
Research Inc.

2001 Initiatives for Clinical Sciences
-
Review and update the Clinical Sciences Procedural Guide.
-
Survey the CS section to solicit members who might be interested in authoring a
book to be published by the brand new AAPS Press.
-
Secure a CS representative for program planning for the AAPS National
Biotechnology Meeting (that will be replacing the Western Regional Meeting).
-
Continue to solicit CS membership to author two ACPE accredited continuing
education programs via AAPS Online.
-
Survey the CS section to elicit interest and ideas for a CS online journal.
-
Continue to build the programming of the CS section for the annual meeting and
begin to expand programming outside of the annual meeting. Currently we are
working on a short course or workshop on clinical trial simulation that we are
planning for Chicago in Sept. of 2001.
-
Expand our membership base by actively recruiting section members.
-
See the establishment of our first affiliated focus group, the Biostatistics
Focus group.
-
Pursue the possibility of taking one of the successful CS programming ideas and
repeating the program with an international organization.
-
Continue to promote the development and standardization of clinical scientist
training programs.
-
Offer two $500 travel awards for Clinical Science graduate student
presentations.
The CS section desires to have more of our members become active in the
section. So...if you would like to help guide the future of the section, please
let
the section officers know. Everyone can help now by offering nominations for
officers for the coming year and nominations for fellows from our section
(please
e-mail the vice-chair with your nominations by the end of February) or e-mail
respective committee chairs with your interest in serving on their committee.
