Vision 2020
A Vision for the Pharmaceutical Sciences
The pharmaceutical sciences have expanded beyond the discipline-based scientific
environment of the 20th century, to encompass all areas of health science. With
a global perspective, pharmaceutical sciences have the potential to advance
world health through improved prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and cure of
illness and disease.
The synergies achieved through interdisciplinary research have fueled scientific
breakthroughs. As a result of efforts by pharmaceutical scientists, people are
healthier, live longer are more focused on issues of wellness and disease
prevention.
By 2020, the pharmaceutical sciences have contributed significantly to:
- Unlocking the mysteries of disease.
- Providing universal, affordable, high quality health care.
- Focusing world attention on disease prevention and wellness.
- Initiating early and accurate diagnosis of disease.
- Discovering a wealth of therapeutic modalities to treat and cure disease.
- Tailoring diagnostic and therapeutic methods to the individual patient.
- Fostering a partnership between the public, government, and all scientific
disciplines.
AAPS in 2020
AAPS in 2020 is a global organization of innovators from the myriad disciplines
that now comprise the pharmaceutical sciences. AAPS is a conduit for the open
exchange of scientific knowledge. It excels in providing the resources and environment
to enable members to advance the frontiers of science. AAPS and its members
are leaders in providing health education and counsel to the public, peers,
employers, governments, and health care regulators of the world. Mentoring pharmaceutical
scientists is an important role and responsibility of AAPS, as is the direction
of science policy regarding health care. Membership in AAPS is a statement of
professional commitment to ethical science and service.
AAPS Mission Statement
The mission of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS)
is to serve the pharmaceutical sciences, promote the economic vitality of the
pharmaceutical sciences and scientists, and represent scientific interests within
academia, industry, government and other private and public institutions.
The purpose of AAPS is to serve its membership, the pharmaceutical sciences,
the biomedical and biotechnological community, the health professions, and the
interest of the public health by:
- Providing a forum for open interchange and dissemination of scientific knowledge;
- Influencing the formation of public policy relevant to health and related
issues of public concern;
- Promoting the pharmaceutical sciences and providing for recognition of individual
achievement; and,
- Fostering education, career growth and the personal development of its members.
Recognizing that modern science is conducted in an integrated fashion comprising
many disciplines, AAPS seeks to foster the integration of those sciences related
to discovery, design, analysis, development, production, quality control, safety,
clinical evaluation, regulation, distribution and utilization of drugs and drug
delivery systems. Thus AAPS should serve as the primary focus of and forum for
interest in these disciplines.
