PROGRAM:

Aqueous Film Coating: Critical Factors Affecting Product Quality

DATE:

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2001

SPEAKER:

Dr. SIMON TASKER, COLORCON

When developing a tablet dosage form for a particular drug, one area that needs to be addressed is film coating; more specifically aqueous film coating. With aqueous film coating, several issues need to be considered. In Dr. Tasker's talk, the criteria for tablet design, coating formulation selection and process scale up factors will be outlined. In addition, Dr. Tasker will discuss the choices that need to be made in the early phases of development and what can be done later if the research & development team gets it wrong.

Dr. Tasker is head of Pharmaceutical Technical Services for Colorcon North America. He received his Ph.D. from the School of Chemistry at the University of Durham in 1994. His technical experience includes a position as a research associate from Biophysics and Surface Analysis Group, in the School of Pharmacy, University of Nottingham, UK, from 1994 to 1996. Late in 1996, he joined Colorcon Europe as a scientist in the product development and technical services groups. In 1999, Dr. Tasker transferred to Colorcon North America in a technical management role.

Dr. Tasker's technical interests include film coating, tableting and fluid bed technologies, as they relate to the preparation of oral dosage forms, and the implementation of product and process optimization. He has several publications in the areas of modification and characterization of polymer surfaces.
