AAPS Workshop Explores Polymeric Biomaterials in Drug Delivery

ARLINGTON, Va. - The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) will offer the AAPS Workshop on Critical Issues in the Design and Applications of Polymeric Biomaterials in Drug Delivery, Feb. 28-March 1, 2002 at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Va. The workshop is co-sponsored with the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials.

"The workshop is designed to inform participants how novel biomaterials are used to improve existing drug delivery dosage forms and designing the dosage forms of the future," said workshop co-chair Bozena Michniak, New Jersey Center for Biomaterials. "For example, novel biomaterials are being used in gene delivery products as well as high molecular proteins and peptides."

Workshop attendees will:

  • Discuss critical issues in the development of polymers for pharmaceutical applications
  • Identify new approaches for the delivery of biologically active proteins and peptides for formulation of effective dosage forms
  • Examine the status of viral and non-viral vector approaches in gene delivery and design of formulations
  • Discuss toxicology and stability of resulting novel pharmaceutical formulations for gene, peptide/protein delivery as well as the use of polymeric carriers

Workshop co-chair Joachim Kohn, Rutgers University, said the workshop aims to serve as a bridge between the pharmaceutical sciences and material sciences. "We intend to present the advantages of well-designed materials to the pharmaceutical scientists and to show the material scientists the important applications for new materials in drug delivery," Kohn said.

Session topics include: lipid mediated delivery of DNA, drug delivery of macro and polar molecules, and polymers that enhance intracellular trafficking of drugs. Joseph R. Robinson, Ph.D., AAPS Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award winner, will deliver the closing remarks on the topic of the future of polymeric biomaterials in drug delivery.

Attendees will be able to view abstracts of biomaterial research papers in poster format during the workshop. Additional information on the workshop can be found on AAPS Pharmaceutica at www.aapspharmaceutica.com/biomaterials.
