American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Receives
Summit Award for Product Quality Research Institute
ARLINGTON, Va. – The American Association of Pharmaceutical
Scientists (AAPS) will be honored with one of four Summit Awards to be presented
by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) at the inaugural Summit
Awards Dinner on Sept. 19, 2000 at the National Building Museum in Washington,
D.C. The Summit Award is the highest honor ASAE bestows upon associations that
implement new and innovative programs to advance their communities. The Summit
Award winners were culled from close to 300 entries. AAPS receives this award
for facilitating with other organizations the creation of the Product Quality
Research Institute (PQRI).
PQRI is a collaborative effort by the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA)
Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), industry, and academia. The
institute’s recommendations are expected to speed new drug approvals and reduce
the industry’s cost for pharmaceutical development. "It provides a ‘Win-Win-Win’
opportunity for the industry, government, and most importantly, the public,"
said John B. "Jack" Cox, CAE, AAPS’ Executive Director. "AAPS is honored to
be recognized with this prestigious award, of course, but in truth, it also
belongs to all the organizations and people who worked so long and hard to make
PQRI a reality," continued Cox. PQRI’s other founding members include: FDA,
CDER, Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), Generic
Pharmaceutical Association (GPA), National Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers
(NAPM), Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), and Parenteral Drug
Association (PDA).
About AAPS: PQRI is administratively managed by AAPS. AAPS is a professional,
scientific society of more than 10,000 members employed in academia, industry,
government and other research institutes worldwide. Founded in 1986, AAPS aims
to advance science through the open exchange of scientific knowledge, serve as an information resource, and
contribute to human health through pharmaceutical research and development.

About ASAE: ASAE is an individual membership organization made up
of 25,000 association executives and suppliers. Its members manage leading trade
associations, individual membership societies, and voluntary organizations across
the United States and in 50 countries around the globe. It also represents suppliers
of products and services to the association community.
About PQRI: PQRI consists of a board of directors, a scientific steering
committee, technical committees and working groups. The five-member board of
directors oversees the administrative management and operations of the institute.
The steering committee oversees all scientific aspects of the institute, including
the selection of research topics, approval of study protocols and reports, and
making final recommendations to FDA based on the outcome of PQRI research. Technical
committees are formed by the steering committee and charged with development of
PQRI research programs and projects. Under the direction of the technical committees,
working groups will further develop and execute specific research proposals. The
ultimate goal of these working groups is to develop scientific knowledge, which
will support appropriate changes to regulatory policies.
