AAPS SYMPOSIUM TO PRESENT LATEST DEVELOPMENTS IN CHEMINFORMATICS

Alexandria, VA -- June 14, 1999 --The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) will host the AAPS Symposium on Cheminformatics in Drug Discovery on Sept. 13-14, 1999, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Va. The symposium will present the latest developments in cheminformatics as applied to drug discovery.

Cheminformatics is the management of information about small molecule chemicals. It involves the storage, display, and searching of chemical structures and their physical and biological properties

"The power of new computing technologies puts cheminformatics at the forefront of the search for new drugs," said Peter M. Smith, Ph.D., chair of the symposium's planning committee. "All discovery scientists must use a variety of these technologies to manage and communicate their research results, and in many cases, these can replace traditional chemistry."

This symposium will combine information technology topics with drug discovery issues and review all aspects of chemistry information management including:

  • Advanced computing architectures in cheminformatics
  • New database developments which greatly enhance chemistry information management
  • Prediction and calculations for drug-like properties
  • Drug lead profiling and diversity metrics
  • Data mining and visualization techniques
  • Links to large molecule systems (protein and bioinformatics)
  • New tools for other related information such as reactions, natural products and images
For more information on this symposium, including a complete preliminary program, registration fees, and accommodations, visit AAPS Online at www.aaps.org/edumeet/cheminfo/index.html.

AAPS is a professional, scientific society of more than 10,000 members employed in academia, industry, government and other research institutes worldwide. Founded in 1986, AAPS aims to advance science through the open exchange of scientific knowledge, serve as an information resource, and contribute to human health through pharmaceutical research and development.
