Nutraceuticals Almost every day another story appears in the media about dietary supplements
-- or nutraceuticals, as they’re sometimes called. A once fledgling industry
that lured consumers with the virtues of natural remedies has grown into a $15.7
billion behemoth, a political power and a magnet for controversy. This issue
looks at the science behind nutraceuticals.

The Regulatory Scene Before any drug reaches the market, the FDA requires pharmaceutical
manufacturers to meet regulatory standards that are constantly evolving. In
this issue we’ll look at the approval process, Congressional initiatives, clinical
trials, and other issues in the regulatory scene.
April
Pharmacogenomics Recent advances in human genome research have changed the future of
health care, particularly the use of pharmaceuticals. In this issue we’ll look
at pharmacogenomics -- the identification of genetic variations that impact
the efficacy of drugs -- the method of analysis that will be used to create
“designer drugs” tailored to each patient.

the rise of dietary supplement use, and Internet-based prescription drug marketing
-- have a trickle-down effect that impacts pharmaceutical scientists and, finally,
the consumer. This issue will examine the latest industry trends and their fallout
effect.
August
Market Research This issue will feature the results of the first in a series of AAPS
Market Research reports highlighting member interests in a wide variety of pharmaceutical
products and services.
September
AAPS 15th Anniversary Issue This issue will include highlights of AAPS since its founding in 1986, as
well as the evolution of the pharmaceutical sciences over the last 15 years,
and we’ll examine what the future holds.
October/November
The Frontiers of Drug Discovery This issue will examine the latest drug discoveries in the pharmaceutical
sciences. In particular, we’ll look at how these discoveries will impact the
treatment of diseases like HIV/AIDS, cancer and diabetes in the near future.
December
Salary Survey This issue features the latest AAPS Salary and Employment Status Survey,
covering all fields within the pharmaceutical sciences. Survey responses from
AAPS members form the basis for this report.
